My Baby is Seventeen
(Plus one week and a day.) Whaaaaaaaa. Where does the time go? To all of you out there with little ones, cherish the moments. They fly by so quickly; and before you know it, your baby is going off to college! (I still have two years, but you know what I mean.)
Since we missed the teenager's birthday due to my having to leave for DC last weekend, we just moved it. I made his favorite cake, chocolate with buttercream icing. Actually, his favorite is red velvet, but I decided against the red food dye for obvious reasons.
My mom bought me this Cake Doctor book several years ago, and it's just wonderful. It tells you how to "doctor" up cake mixes to get that from-scratch taste. Since I've never been able to bake, I find this soooo helpful.
I just took chocolate cake mix and added 3 eggs, 1/4 oil, 1-2 t vanilla and a cup of sour cream. You can also add a couple of T of cocoa if you like it more chocolatey. Lovely. Boom, done!
For some reason, I forgot about my food colorings to write on the cake plus I used all the icing and forgot to save some (hey, I'm still tired!), so I opted for the ol' stand-by--chocolate chips and silver dragees. Now, it really looks homemade, hehe. We don't care as long as it tastes good.
Now, we're just waiting for him to get home from work. The hub is making him steak and baked potatoes on the grill. (The hub always cooks on Sundays.) Gotta love it! Yummm.

Hi Rosa, thanks for coming to vist my blog. That cake looks wonderful. I have a 17 year old son too, how old is your other son. They grow up so quickly but they are lovely aren't they?
Oh, happy birthday to the teen! Yes, they grow up too fast (can't believe my daughter's 21). Great cake, I'm sure the birthday boy will agree - I never thought of doctoring up a cake mix. Enjoy your celebration!
Your cake looks yummy! Happy Birthday to your son!
My "baby" is 35 and the mother of a teen herself!
Time truly does fly....
The cake looks great. I love The Cake Doctor books. I have that one and the chocolate book too. Have a fun celebration!
They sure do grow up fast. My babies are now 21 and 24. Hard to believe. I remember their little sweet chubby cheeks and legs as if it was yesterday.
So true...time flies so fast and it's hard to comprehend that our teenagers where little babies not long ago. Too fast!
Happy Belated Birthday wishes to your young man...the cake looks scrummy :)
Happy Birthday. The cake looks great!
