Mom must have been out and about food gathering for you to get this great picture. Awesome.
I feel the same way about the baby ducks all around the university here. Every spring there is a battle for dominance amongst the male population with the end result being lots of little baby ducks who, overnight, seem to grow up.
I can't believe that mama bird is allowing you to take the photos! what kind of bird are they?
