Can't Get Enough

Cheers to autumn, finally!!

I've found a new spot to sit and watch the leaves turn. Just loving the leaves and their brilliant colors.

I think the entire process of watching/waiting for them to fall exhausts Frankie. Yawwwwwwn.

The hub has been home this week; and we've been getting a lot done while he's around . . . including getting our early vote in! Yay, glad that's done. (Now if I can just talk the kid into coming home on Friday to do the same!!)

Don't you just love old government buildings? NOT! A tad too hospitalesque for my taste.

And, speaking of hospitals, it's October, ladies--Breast Cancer Awareness month. Don't forget to schedule your yearly mammogram. Ugh.

Happy Fall, y'all!!

I Will, I Will, I Will

“The time is always right to do what is right.” -Martin Luther King, Jr.

Sometimes I find it very difficult, in my older age, to contain my anger with ignorance and prejudice.  May we all find a little more tolerance for one another today and carry it forward.

November

November two!  Already!  Birthday month!  I'm just a little excited, can ya tell? Today, most states are holding their gubernatorial elections.  I got out pretty early and voted for the next Governor of Tennessee as well as our representatives in the House and Senate.  I try and time it right after rush hour and before lunch hour.  It seems to work pretty well for this locale.  The hub ran over before he headed out to Memphis for the day.  Ugh.  What a dreary drive that is.

I've been playing with glitter for a couple of days now.  I'm going to make some banners.  I am so loving all these glittery golds!  Of course, it's everywhere now.  But, a little glitter here and there never hurts anything.  I have to smile when I see a little sparkly on the floor.

We have perfect fall weather, a little cooler than it's been.  My one oak tree is gorgeous! LOVE it!
Happy November!

Independence Day 2010

We are chillin' on the river enjoying the beautiful Day.

Last night, we had a preview of fireworks as we were driving along the Bay.

We were on our way home from having ice cream at Jolly's in Fairhope. YUM.

Then we set off a few fireworks ourselves.

Today, we had our usual hot dogs and hamburgers on the grill. Yum!

Now, we're awaiting the sunset and then more fireworks tonight! Yippee.

Happy fourth everyone!

PS Our little piece of Heaven is still free from oil. We are still able to fish and swim. We're fortunate. I will share pics from the Gulf beaches later. Yuk.

Alive and Well

Just busy. One more week of school and then we're over and out! Planning a trip to Europe, as you can see. My printer spit paper out every which direction which amused Bella, so I left it. K, here's the itinerary: Dublin, Brussels, London, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Edinburgh, Lake District and then back to London. Two weeks. Phew. A lot to see. We bringing my niece Jacq! So, of course, we have to fit EVERYTHING in! Oooooof.

I finally got around to working on the kid's childhood room. The bunk beds, gone. I put them up for sale, along with a whole slew of items included, on Craig's List. My first time using it. They were sold within a couple of hours! I was very pleased with myself. And I was happy that a young family will get another 15 years of usage out of them.

Ew, look how yucky after we lifted the mattress. EW. Bad boy.

And the walls! Oy! Lots of spackling and priming. Yuck.

But it all turned out quite nicely. It turned out to be a putty color. The kid was animate about having a more masculine color. He says the taupe I used in the teenager's old room was too pink. Wha??? Oh well, I didn't redo it for him anyway. Regardless, he was happy to be back in his old room, updated a tad.

And I got "my" room back for the girls (all of my nieces)! I'm going to girly it up. I don't have a girly room in the house, so this is going to be it, by golly! The curtains are going somewhere else and I just pulled the little rug from my room to get an idea of what some color on the floor will look like. My plan is to do the twin beds in white-on-white and then add splashes of color on the walls and floor. Yay!

Look at the last of the cookies from Carlo's. Heart shaped. Aw. I ate it.

Mom's peace lily is blooming happily. Sweet.

The Cumberland River has finally gone down. This is one of the waterways that did so much damage in downtown Nashville. You can barely see our Titan's football field at the top left which was completely flooded. The waters rose two block up the streets. Crazy. It so reminded me of back home in Virginia when the Potomac would flood Old Town Alexandria. We are having storms again today and my alarm keeps going off warning of more flash flooding. Oh no.

A shot at the Hermitage Hotel at brunch last weekend. This was at the front desk. Perty.

Think we're heading down to Riverside next weekend for a week. The oil has not hit Mobile Bay yet. I keep praying that the gush will soon be capped off. C'mon people, we can do this.

I can't even imagine the impact we will see down the road. It makes me utterly sick to my stomach. Literally.

Shame on US.

Unenlightenment

I have been so uninspired lately and have been wanting to start journaling or something, anything! I had found this wonderful house cut out and finally, today, I sat down and did my first page.

(WARNING: Rant On.) I have been feeling a lot of resentment towards so much ignorance in America these days; and I don't know where to turn except perhaps paper. It seems we are stepping back in time rather than moving forward and growing as a nation. There is an awful lot of hatred and divide growing here in the US, and I just can't seem to grasp the reasoning--other than the media stirring things up, as usual. I simply cannot understand, for the life of me, why people listen to one idea, or source, and run with it. Ask some questions. Look around and get some answers. For instance, when President Obama spoke to school children on the opening day of school, what kind of message did it send to these kids whose parents kept them home so they wouldn't listen to a message from the President? A speech that clearly--if they had looked into it before reacting--was educational and not political? Is it racism? Is it ignorance? What is it? Isn't this the next generation of Americans? I just don't understand where this country is going with this sort of mentality. And then when a United States Congressman yells out loud "You lie" to the President of the United States during the health care speech to the joint session of Congress, I was mortified. What is going on here? I don't normally rant about this stuff, but it has just been eating me up. Again, perhaps if I start journaling, I won't have to bother you with it. (Rant off.)

Anyhoo, in other stuff about the place, the kid found this old piece of stained glass that apparently I had never finished. It is quite crude and needs a whole lot of fixin' (like this country????--sorry). But I put it in the window anyway. One day.

I did skim through my Apartment Therapy and found some more great ideas, of course. Hangers. Simple hangers.

Perhaps these will inspire me to do something artsy rather than dwell on the unenlightenment of this country.

Ok, I'll shut up now.

President Obama Speaks at My High School

What an inspiration to listen to President Obama speak to the next generation of Americans. It just so happened that he spoke at MY Alma Mater, Wakefield High School in Arlington, VA.

I am so proud!

In case you were unable to hear it, you can go here to catch the video. I wish every American would give their child the opportunity to hear this speech. It truly was inspiring--not only to my 15-year old, but also to me.

Ok, now, I expect straight A's from the kid!

From Savannah to Tallahassee to Riverside

We left Savannah on July 3 and headed towards Tallahassee.

Before leaving, the cuz straightened my hair. It lasted all of about 15 minutes once I stepped outside, of course. Oh well.

We stopped at Waffle House on the road as we all felt like breakfast. Yummy.

That held us until we made it to Tallahassee and it just so happened that Ted's was right next door. These are my "kids." lol We all had bison burgers which were delicious.

July 4th, we woke up and hit the road again and made it to Riverside in time to hit the river for a swim before heading to dinner. Seafood of all sorts! These are my royal reds.

And the hub's oysters.

Then it was time to sit and watch the hub's fireworks show.

It started out with the Chinese firecrackers.

Then off to the big guns. So much fun even though I'm terrified of the things. I keep my distance inside the screened-in porch!

A jaw breaker contest.

Watermelon to end the day all-American style.

Then lights out and to bed after many days of driving for me!

I'm trying to catch up!!!
