Have you ordered your King Cake for Mardi Gras yet? I just did. In fact, I didn't even order one for us since our household has shrunk by one this year. But I did send one to the teenager at University. How fun will that be?
I try and order from a new place every couple of years under the suggestions of Chowhound. I used to always order my cakes from Gambino's as that is where USA TODAY's New Orleans' office used to get them from and send to headquarters way back when. But in years' past, Gambino's would get my orders wrong and the cakes would come in looking like something the cat had drug in. The last couple of years, I ordered from Randazzo's and they have been very good. But this year, I found a bakery, also recommended by Chowhound, that makes the old traditional King Cakes with just the sugar on top--none of that goopy icing! Yay. So this year I ordered the cakes from Haydel's Bakery. I can't wait to see if the teenager likes it better than with the icing and fillings. The brioche bread doesn't need anything, if you ask me.
So what are you waiting for? Get on the ball and get that King Cake ordered before you forget! Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) is on February 24 this year!

Oh,my. What memories your post has stirred up ... all good! We used to order from Haydel's every year. The cake came with a baby (of course), some beads and a tiny little figure in a mardi gras costume. I'll check out Haydel's web site. Thank you!
I had a King Cake for the first time last year at a Mardi Gras party... it was so fun!
I lurrve your new blog design. Oh, and I really lurrve Warren Zevon, so there.
Oh Rosa---You are talking my language here.. I lived in New Orleans for 5 yrs. back in the '80's. We went to 28 Mardi Gras parades one year--and collected all kinds of good stuff (from cups to beads to doubloons). SUCH memories!!!
Yes, I've had many a King Cake--and have gotten the baby many times!!!!!
Oh such memories!!! (Sounds like an upcoming blog!!! ha)
Hugs,
Betsy
I still have never tried a king cake - but I sure have heard about them! Have some on me Rosa!
HUGS!
Wow, I love your blog!!! I will have to be careful, though, it could cause weight gain. :D
We've already had several of those here as they are a Christmas cake. My husband likes the one they do in Provence better as it has candied fruit in and on it.
Ooh Mardi Gras sounds like fun! I like the new look blog X
Is it that time already? Always a harbinger of spring!
Hmmm, maybe I'll make one this year. That might be fun. Wish I could eat in Loo-zee-anna, though.
The teen will love that king cake! It's always a treat to get a "care package" from home.
I'm reading Anne Rice's "Mayfair Witches" series and they're in New Orleans, so I'm learning a lot about it!
