Oh, Woe is Me

Can you hear the violins playing? (hehe) The hub is leaving tomorrow for China for a week. He always heads off into the sunset after the security level has been raised. Joy. I'm glad he's going to Asia rather than Europe. I've been asking for a lot of thoughts and prayers lately, but there's one more for ya! Please?

Growing Up

The teenager is maturing day by day. We took his "new" car in to have it checked out to make sure everything was up to snuff before I'd let him drive it. Several items needed fixing, of course--a motor mount and a couple of leaks in the oil pan and gaskets and stuff. He got his first real sense of how expensive everything is and how fast money can be spent (and how hard it is to earn it!).

We had left about $350 in his savings account for misc. things for the car. He had a paycheck of about $372 and a birthday check for $50. Guess what the charge for fixing everything on his car was? $775. Yep, all gone. The teenager has no money. hehe. Oh, the facts of life are hitting him hard and fast. Of course, there were other items that need to be addressed at some point like a new muffler and the back windows don't roll up all the way (giggle); but those can wait a little while.

This is his first experience dealing with earning, saving and spending. He is going to learn real fast how to start budgeting items. Of course, he has all these big dreams for a stereo system for the car, tented windows, etc. Now that he's down to $0 (actually in the hole about $500 that he owes us), he'll feel the crunch real fast. We bought his first tank of gas for him, but now he's on his own. His grandparents gave him $50 in Shell gas cards, which was the perfect gift. But, after that....dun dun dun.

Thank goodness school starts on Monday. That will curtail all the joy rides for the most part! He just got the car tonight and has already called to ask if he can pick up a friend after work and then come home. He is just itching to drive that thing!!! How fun for him. I feel good that he paid for it and is learning life-long lessons. I'm proud of him.

Awww, shucks.

In Need of Support

Peggy is in need of support from our little community. If you have a moment, please give her a visit and let her know she is in all of our thoughts. Her latest addition to the Homestead is little Davie. He has come down with an incurable disease and she has to make the decision . . . well, you know. Sniffle, sniffle.

Not only that, but now she has to worry about Miss Diva who may also contract the disease.

Oh Peggy, I know you must be hurting with such a heavy burden on your shoulders. Please know I am praying for you and your little family.

"Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen."

All Women and Children Off the Streets!

Warning!! The teenager has his license! Yahoo. He passed his driving test, of course. Poor kid was so terrified, I had him driving all morning to get the nerves out. The good thing is his car is in the shop getting tuned up to MY standards, hehe. I think it's good he has to wait another day to drive on his own. He's been through the ringer (as far as teenagers go) so he needs a day to get the adenalin out of his system.

Everyone at the Franklin DMV was so nice!!! OMG! And the things they are dealing with would give one cause to be cranky (unlike the ones yesterday who had NO excuse!). These poor employees are literally working out of a trailer with no air conditioning and only fans blowing (and you know how hot it's been). There were about four employees to over 100 waiting people in there. They were gracious and courteous and smiled and laughed with everyone else. Yesterday, you could have cut the tension in Columbia with a knife! What a total difference. I thanked them profusely for being so sweet under such harsh conditions. You see, there is always three nice people to every one nasty one (my personal calculations). I need to remind myself of that. Sorry for my conniption yesterday! Geesh. But, it really wasn't necessary how they treated us.

Thanks to all for your thoughts and prayers coming this way to the teen. It worked! Now, I'll probalby never see him again until he needs something. Oh well, such is life. I remember those days!

There's a New Buggy on the Block

(And looks like a new driver, to boot!)

We all went out yesterday and found the teenager a car of his own. He has been saving his money since he started working and had quite a bit in the bank. (He'll owe us a few of his paychecks, regardless.) The rules were, if he wasn't going to take the hub's old VW, it was up to him to get his own. The teenager chose the latter. We drove out to used-car central in Madison, TN--about 45 minutes from here. He and the hub had spied a couple of cars on Sunday when they went out looking; but this dealer wasn't open. And, so we returned yesterday afternoon.

Of course, the teenager had his eye on a couple of sporty cars; but the dealer talked him out of them (yea!!) and he went for the 1992 Honda Accord. (It reminds me of my first car--1970s Toyota Corolla sedan.) It's a perfect little first car. It's a four-cylinder so he can't go too fast, which I like, a lot! He's so proud of it. Now if we can get his license!

We went online yesterday and made an appointment for his driving test. I set it up in Columbia, TN, which is about 30 miles away. The one in Franklin is in a little trailer (I kid you not) and has to deal with all the growth out here. The one in Columbia is brand new and huge for a tiny town--you do the math! So I make the appointment for 11, and we leave here at 10:30, plenty of time to get there--IF I DROVE!! The teenager drove the speed limit (GRRRRR--hehe) and of course, we were five minutes late. Would they take him? Of course not. The bureaucratic DMV Queen Be-yotches that they are--you know the type--said, "Nope, he's late, ain't gonna happen--NEXT!" It just demoralized the teenager. I wanted to reach around and strangle the woman.

I'm a nice person, you know that; but I do not deal well with rude, obnoxious and "got you in the palm of my hand and I want to watch you squirm" types. Nope, I don't deal well with them at all. I wonder how they sleep at night. Maybe they thrive on that type of menial power, I just don't know. When I tried to get a straight answer out of her, she couldn't give it to me. Even her side kick said "Can't I just get him through?" and she still said no. I asked, politely, if I could make another appointment for later in the day. Nope. We would have to take a number and wait and then took great pride in saying "he will not get in before 2." When I inquired a little more about how she came about that time frame --if there were other appointments or if there were just "numbers" in front of us she got all flustered. I wouldn't drop it because I know how it is when you stay up all night worrying about your driving test only to find out you can't take it??? So I keep asking if I can just make another appointmentt so we could leave and come back at the designated time and she didn't get it. I asked very clearly again, "can I M-A-K-E an A-P-P-O-I-N-T-M-E-N-T? --at which time she had to walk over (as SLOW as she could, of course, because she is the Queen) to some other Better than Tho and ask, very LOUDLY and POINTING at us, if we could make an appointment because we were FIVE MINUTES LATE or would we just have to wait. Ready? You can NOT make an appointment at the DMV. You have to go home and get on the computer and make one and then come back. Now, tell me, does that make any sense what so ever? Huh? Nuh uh, that just ain't right. I don't know about you, but I don't do waiting in line with a number for three hours very well. Just add that little diddy to my list of "Uh uh, ain't gonna do its." Life is too short. I will come back another day. I can think of a million other things to do for three hours than be at the DMV with the rest of the cattle run. Some people don't have a choice, I do, for another week until my son goes back to school. I chose not to give that thing any more satisfaction.

Phew (rant off, as Mr. English would say), so we're off tomorrow to try again at the one in Franklin. Wish us luck. I may just have to open a can of Whoopass if someone crosses me there! hehe. (Yea, big talker, Rosa!) That's more like me above.

The Penny

I didn't post today, I was just too busy with family stuff. Will fill you in later!

But I just checked in with Shelley (who I adore!) over at The Little Scrapbook; and I read her latest posting "Pennies And Fairies From Heaven?" What a perfect story to end my day. Thank you Shelley!!

You just HAVE to go on over and read her Penny Story! (She always throws other little tidbits of info in her postings also--like her next project (hehe), little felt wee folk.)

Nighty-night. Off to dream of a clean house!

The Monster, Slain

You didn't think I'd get to it today, did you? Well, to tell you the truth, I didn't either. But I did. Around 4:30, I finally got around to getting out and buying some containers to put the important stuff junk in. I found some cute and colorful hat boxes and a couple of little cases with clasps. I threw away a whole trash bag full of paper and stuff. Why I let it go so long is anybody's guess. But I did it, I slew the monster.

A place for everything and everything in its place. I also found these great brown and red cubbies for what nots--writing stuff is what I put in there. I also found this quilted bag for almost nothing which I have informed the hub of the following: "Your mail will be put in there everyday so you will know exactly where it . It is yours to do with as you wish, just don't put it on my desk!" Ha. We'll see if he ever looks in there and removes it.

I feel so much better. All I need to do now is get to my upstairs desk, where I sit now, and go through everything. It's as bad as my downstairs desk only three times as large!! Lovely. I think I need some advil.

Just the Delivery Person

St. Francis of Assisi
Patron Saint of Animals and Ecology

Tonight, we all went out to dinner at Famous Dave's BBQ. We got a late start and arrived there about 8:45 or so. While we were walking up to the "porch," this little furball caught my eye. It was this tiny little kitten! He was rubbing up against the stairs there and but when I went towards him, he got timid and ran away under a car. Poor little boo. Of course, the family knows my heart for cats and they just stood there as I tried to coax the little fellow out from under the car--not a complaint out of them. Of course, the owners of the car came out as my big behind was hanging out from under their car--joy. The hub explained a little kitten was under there and we were trying to get it. We finally did grab him after about 10 minutes of chasing him down. There were no objections from the kids or the hub, we all just got back into the car with the little guy (gal?) and took it home. Of course, the kids wanted to keep it, but with three cats already, uh, that's a no brainer! I would just take it to the vets tomorrow and have it all checked out and see if they could find it a home. When we got home, we took him to the basement (away from our critters) with a bowl of water and food and left him there while we went back to have dinner.

As soon as we walked in and were greeted, I asked them if they knew a little kitten was out in the parking lot. You know, people may have come in and told them. Nope. No idea. No one had said anything all night. I told them how cute he was and all and how we took him back home in fear that he would be run over or something. The guy said, "I'll take him if you don't want him!" Can you believe that? It's as if we were sent there to care for this little kitten for a little while until the right family could be found. And, just like that, he was adopted. Awww. Doesn't that just warm the heart?
The waiter waited until we were done eating; and then he and his girlfriend followed us to our house so they could pick the little kitty up. On the way there, all I could think of, OF COURSE, was that they were going to see my hissy fit on the kitchen floor! ha. Can you believe it? AS if!!! No one has been in our house for over a week (and it's been tidy), but the day I have crap lying all over the kitchen floor, someone comes over. hehe. And, of course, they came through the horrible garage with all my boxes from DC thrown about only to enter the kitchen next. They must have thought "Gee, these people are P-I-G-S! ha! I told them to be careful as they walked by my "pile" and they just giggled. The guy, Joe, wished me luck with my pile as he was leaving. Isn't' it always the way? You can keep your house clean for-EV-VER, but the time you don't is the time you're bound to have unexpected company. Didn't' I just say, I hope we don't get anyone visiting????!!! Yep, I did. I remember.

Oh well, the good thing is the baby got a good home. The young lady took the kitty lovingly in her arms and you could hear it purring as they walked out the door. Awwwwww. So sweet.

Tagged, I'm It!

This is my first tag thingy coming from Peggy! After my last post, I was a little reluctant to see what it was. My organizational skills are not the best, obviously. But, after taking pics of everything, hey, I'm not that bad. Pretty bad, but not all bad. Here 'tis.

1. Old obits found at my mom's house
2. My hub's business card
3. My doctor's business card
4. $7 cash
5. 1906 good luck penny (I think, I may have already lost it!)

Awwww, Finally

We finally got a little well-needed rain yesterday. It was glorious. It didn't really cool things down until the evening, but just not having the blazing sun burning down on you made things bearable. I could feel quite a difference in the upstairs temperature. I really think we're going to have to break down and get an attic fan. It actually got cold in our bedroom last night. I used all the "kivers" to stay warm--which I love!

I had the worst day with my allergies yesterday. Ugggg. I had run out of my zyrtec (scratch scratch, sniffle sniffle); and when I went to pick it up at the pharmacist, it had not been called in by my doc yet. "Try again on Monday," they said. Monday? Do you see my face, do you see my eyes, can you tell it need it NOW! Grrrr. I was absolutely dying. Sneezing like I had a major head cold, runny and itchy eyes, itchy body....it was horrible. She had pitty on me and gave me three 5 mg to hold me over for the weekend. I took them (all) as soon as I pulled away, like an addict. Man. It was bad.

I had a written prescription for zyrtec that the doc had written months ago that I had not filled -- somewhere. I started looking, like a mad woman (who had just taken 15 mg of zyrtec), to no avail. I did, however, find my old wallet, hehe, that I thought I had hid under the seat of my car and thought to myself that the vacummers had taken it that last time I washed my car. My bad.

Oh my gosh, I say my kids are pigs, but I have no one to blame but myself for this. (Guess the apple really doesn't fall far from the tree, Lord forbid.) Yep, I had a hissy fit. Uh huh, talk about p-i-g-s! I'm as bad as they come. I showed you my catch-all in the kitchen. Well, this is one of the drawers underneath! Everything kept coming out and falling on the floor and I was getting tangled up in threads and ribbons and cables and wires and Lord knows what! I just blew up! I figure I'd clean the drawers out if I made a big enough mess. I really wasn't thinking as I threw everything on the floor with a couple of expletives included. Guess what? It's still sitting there. I just don't even have the energy. The kids, however, are getting a kick out of saying, "Don't even talk to me about my room" each time they walk by the junk heap. Does anyone else out there have drawers like this? It's a crying shame, isn't it? How does it get this way? Do little gremlins come in and just mess it all up? I have to admit, I don't think I have ever cleaned these drawers out since we've lived here; and that's going on over two years!!! (Shhhhh.) I just hope company doesn't come a'knockin'! ha.

I finally found the prescription, on the above-pictured desk, in my red checkbook. (You can even see a corner of IT peeking out in the junk pile on the right of the desk!! GRRRRRRRRR) I spent all day looking for it and found it at 9:40 p.m. The mad woman was going to find it if it killed her! I drove to the pharmacy--like a bat out of hell--and caught them right before they closed. I didn't take another one, after asking the pharmacist on duty if it would be ok in which she answered NO! (duh) But I did take my 10 mg when I woke up at the crack of dawn! I feel so much more normal today. I have to learn not to go a couple of days without that stuff. I am totally allergic to everything. Ok, lesson learned, mom. --smile--

Sunflower Fix

All of my sunflowers in mom's yard were killed by the washing of the house. I love sunflowers; they're one of my favorite flowers. I get them every year just from the seeds that fall from the bird feeders above. This year, I had quite a "crop" which was all killed. So sad. It was going to be gorgeous. Oh well. I saw these at the market today and just couldn't resist. I put them in the pitcher from France and have them on my kitchen table. Love them!

Tonight's dinner was kind of from last night. The hub came home early yesterday and I had finished making a pork roast but I hadn't put anything on yet for sides. He said let's just go out, and who am I to argue with that? So, I just took the pork roast from last night and cut half of it up and put it in some bbq sauce. The other half I left as a roast for those in the family that don't care for bbq (go figure).

One of my favorites growing up was Bone Sucking Sauce. I find it a little peppery for my taste now (hormones--I blame everything on hormones). I like my sauce a little sweeter these days, so I added a little honey, Worcestershire (hate spelling that word!) and Pickapepper sauce. It was gud.

Now I'm stuffed to the gills (if I had them) and just feel like putting my feet up and watching TV. All the teenagers finally went home to their own families, so I can even put my PJs on early and cruise the house if I want to! Weeee.

P.S. The teenager is actually doing his laundry. Wow.

That Boy is a P-I-G, Pig

After lecturing the teenager for the past two weeks about his laundry, this is what I woke up to in his bathroom this morning. Granted, it's been a frat house here for the past week. He's had at least three friends sleeping over every night. (That's a whole other issue. ) But after his agreeing last night to "do better," I was amazed (not) that he is still leaving his dirty clothes on the floor. And, do you think he could use a towel twice? Uh uh.

Tuesday, I just let him have it. Again, as in my previous Pig Sty post, I just couldn't take it any longer. I had walked by his bathroom (which he shares with the kid--poor guy) for the past two weeks willing myself not to touch all the dirty clothes on the floor. "He'll eventually pick them up and walk the 5 steps and put them down the laundry shoot." Yes, we have a laundry shoot--which makes it even more pathetic that he can't keep his dirty clothes off the floor. Finally, I couldn't take it any longer. I kicked them all into the shoot. And there they have sat.

I made it a point not to wash his clothes. I knew, (thought) eventually, he would ask about clean clothes (the nerve) and then I would be able to turn the situation right back to him. Last night, it happened. He started looking for a piece of clothing to wear today. (Today, the juniors go to school to get their lockers assigned and pick up books from their classes.) As soon as he opened the shoot door, I caught him. I told him all his clothes would sit there until he decided he was going to wash them. I was not going to wait for him to gather two weeks' worth of dirty clothes for me to wash. He said ok, no fight. And so they sit.

And, so when I returned to the house this morning after the frat brothers had left, this is how his bathroom was left.

All of these clothes are going right back in the hamper. I refuse to touch them. My only concern is that he will try to jam them all into the washing machine at once. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for when he decides he has no clean clothes to wear. Grrrrr.

In other news, my boxes from DC arrived today. After I packed up all our junk from the attic, I took them to my brother to ship from the shop (what we've always called our photo business' office). They arrived today. Among other junk, I had shipped some of my artwork from high school. There is one piece that I want to frame just because there's something about it that I like. It's the one of the closet and the clothes hanging. It's probably done at our house because my mom used to always iron in the afternoon and hang the clothes up by the closet. And, of course, this is the one that has had the most damage to it. It's very brittle from being in the attic for so many years (1977--eeeek) and was all folded up on the corners.

I think I'll take it in today and see what can be done. Looks like a piece for the bedroom or bath. Yea yea, if I hang it in the teenager's bathroom, maybe he'll get the idea that most clothes are meant to be hung. Hmmmm, you think it would work? Naaaah, I don't either.

My Wall of Three Rs

I found the old vintage R (left) on Ebay one night while looking around. I've always been fascinated with typefaces. I was told it was from the 1960s. Who knows. When I was in DC and we were looking around Georgetown Park, I had to hit Anthroplogie. I absolutely love their catalog and I was so excited the last time I was home to run into it. I didn't know they had a store until then. Anyway, as soon as I went in, my eye was caught by this green R (bottom right). What it is with green Rs? It's a fabric one and will look cute if I start to stick pins in it, perhaps with little pieces of fabric. We'll see. I love the way they decorate the store. Very eclectic--just my taste. I love this display, what a wonderful idea of a family tree--literally.

Today, since I had all my supplies organized, I thought I would do a quick project. I had this cardboard R from a month ago that I had not done anything with. I brought it out and just started working on it. The picture on the left looks like the teenager when he was about three--exactly! I found it in a card shop. I couldn't resist. I normally begin my work with one pic and go from there. Well, since I had the teenager, I had to put the kid on there too. So, that's him on the right when he was about two years old. This is the first time I haven't worked with boxes. It was very simple. I didn't put a lot of time into it (or at least as much time as I put into my boxes) but it's fine, just the same.

I'll have to start adding other family name letters to the wall to jazz it up a bit. I'm already bored with the green Rs. ha. Probably should have done mine in a different color. Oh well, live and learn.

I'm Nesting

You'd think I was either pregnant (I'm not, thank you very much) or it was fall. I've been in this organizing mode. Dunno why. It's really not like me. haha.

This is me. It looks like this 95% of the time. I can clean it up, and it still catches everything in about a week's time. I've been told, everyone has to have a catch all. Guess this is it.

Today, I had to do some grocery shopping and I went to Costco. I found this neat little rolling organizer for my art stuff. And so, this:

Turned to this:
Oh, and just FYI, the desk looks as messy as it did in the pic above. I didn't even touch it! I did, however, have to clean my freezer out. It had so much old junk that needed throwing away in there; and since tonight it trash night, I figured I could get rid of any old meats without worry about it stinking. Yahoo. Now I only need to clean out the other two freezers, and I'll be good to go! (I kind of feel like Peggy! That woman does more in a day than I do in an entire month!!)

This is how I repaid myself for being so good today. This is another one of my French cups. I sat (actually I stood) and enjoyed a nice cup of tea and marveled over my supplies in one area of the house.

I told you last Friday that I took mom to our favorite thrift store (kind of like an estate sale under one roof). She found a cute shirt; and I found these cute little cottage chairs. I told the woman it was for our "beach" house and she asked where it was. I told her we didn't have one, and she giggled. She said "well, my husband bought me a saddle once and I didn't have a horse." I asked her if she finally got one, and she did. So this is a good sign of nice things to come, I'm hoping. I put them outside to air out. They came from a lake house and had been sitting for a while. Aren't they adorable. I love how the cushions were made. And I also love the different fabric on them. I got them for a bargain. I was so excited!! Now I just have to find a little cottage to put them in!

I also saw this hat which reminded me of Ulla's millinery class. It was beautiful in its simplicity. Isn't it sweet? I don't' wear hats so I left it for someone else to enjoy.
