Honky Tonk Heaven

Nashville is famous for its Honky Tonks. And finally, the hub and I are beginning to get out more thanks to new friends.

On this particular evening, we met up with Sarah and Randy at the Palm for a quick bite and a couple of drinks. They were going to a show; and so the hub and I made our way down Broadway to listen to some live music.

We ended up hanging at Tootsies, one of the old establishments everyone and their mother talks about when it comes to the Grand Ol' Opry.

Ya see, here I am in Tootsies, and just across the alley, the stone and brick wall, is the original Opry House. Now, they just call it the Ryman. It has to be one of the all-time best venues in the states to see anyone. Honestly. It's an old church--wooden pews, wooden floors. It has great acoustics. These two poor guys, ya wonder how many people come back here and take their photos. I sorry. I have a story to tell, guys. Ya know I do.

And, here's the infamous alley. There's a side door here on the left that leads straight to the back of the stage. I've heard that many a star have made their way to Tootsies either before, during and/or after a performance. Ha. In fact, this is where the kid and I "met" Willie Nelson. We waited for him to come off his bus and go in the back way (momma knows these things). The kid was right by the door and Willie rubbed his head before he went inside. Awwww. Precious moment. Gonna have to find that pic. (Of course, I have one!)

The hub is always a good sport when it comes to music. You know I can just about listen to anything and do. The hub is a tad more particular. I have music playing in the house from the time I get up until late afternoon. My mom was the same. She had her country music radio station playing all day. So, I can listen to some country. Let's just say, it is not up there in the hub's choice of tunes. But always the good sport for his kooky wife. To make matters worse for the poor guy, I always have to dance. Ya know he's a Jersey boy, right? They don't dance. Seriously. But, give the hub a drink? He's dancing with me. Oh yea.

I'm going to have to check out this radio show. Looks like George Clinton to me.

Ok. First, let me tell you that this is the inside of the woman's bathroom. This is the exit door from inside--which opens right into the front of the stage. HA! "HELLOOOOOO everyone! Mwaaaaaaa! ow, where's my drink?"

Let me just say that Tootsies' drinks are probably all doubles, if not stronger. I'm tellin' ya, it doesn't take but one to get me dancing. Two? I'm giving the singer a $20 bill and a note, "Hank I or III, even II--or Lucinda Williams?" I got Lucinda. It was good.

Now, with all that being said, I had to CRACK UP when I saw this door. Wow. You have to pretty far gone to not be able to push a door open. But, I get it. After more than two of their drinks? I totally get it! Wonder if there are any local men just waiting to rescue the next drunk stuck in the woman's room? Brawhahahaha!

Alright, now back to reality. The Season is officially over. Sniffle. It was such a great one, too. But, alas, I'm starting to take everything down. Ugh. I don't much like putting things away.

This Week

We had a beautiful sunset this evening. It turned out to be a warmish day; a door and a window were even cracked open. We're pretty fortunate to be able to do that during the winter months down here. Gotta love the fresh air wafting through the house most of the time.

We did have a few days of frigid air come through Middle Tennessee this week though. Even had some snow on Thursday! Yay! Didn't amount to much more than in the photo. Regardless, schools were closed on Friday. Yay! I heart the South!

I can now officially say to the hub, "Why, yes. I do drywall." An old family joke from early in the marriage. Of course, he thinks I can do anything. Ha. Well, the ice maker is on the blink, again. It had a leak; and my floors began to warp. After the entire fall trying to figure out what was leaking, we finally traced it back to the ice maker. Loverly. Long story short, it is defective and needs to be replaced, again. Geesh, Louise. But . . . I do give U-Line credit; they certainly do back their products. I have not had to pay for any repair work on this appliance. Cheers to that! And it seems, they are even going to repair the floors. Those types of companies are few and far between these days, unfortunately. Don't EVEN get me started on the KITCHEN IDIOTS! Braaaawwwhaha! See, I can finally laugh AT that saga! Amen.

I've been rehashing my blog this week, if ya haven't noticed. After spending a LOT of time on the header (comme ci, comme ça), I then learn about all of these new free layouts available out there. And I mean some really nice ones! Wow, who knew? Ok, I know, sorry... I'm the last one on the planet to get that memo. (Yea, yea, I more-or-less took last year off from blogging, 'memberrr?) I still work in Photoshop and Image Shack and HTML code, etc. etc. UGH! Not for much longer, though. Well, maybe. I still enjoy fiddling about with all those PNGs.

Chile Tonight and Hot Tamale

Another wonderful cooking class at the Viking Cooking School in Franklin. Tonight we made beef tamales and other goodies.

And Mexican rice. Bonus was sangria, which they made us wait for. No drinking and cooking! Wha? No fair. Seems the rules have changed.

Jack Rudy Tonic

I've noticed that there seems to be a resurgence in the art of making cocktails. Perhaps it's just that I'm at "that" age where I appreciate the perfect drink prepared just for me. Rather, let's say I'm at the next level of being a foodie, age has nothing to do with it. Yea. "Small batch" and "home made" seem to be the latest buzz words in the making of spirits these days.

I believe I was enlightened by such concoctions at The Patterson House here in Nashville--a lovely, dark, speakeasy type bar. Their bartenders are kings of mixology. (And I am the queen of All Due Respects.) The hub and I enjoy sitting belly up to the bar so we, or at least I, can be awed by their "iron" mixologistness. They truly are liquid chefs.

Love the name, Cathead so I had to find this vodka. (The site is great, too!) New Year's Eve found me out and about searching for some champagne for the evening's soirée at Riverside. Somehow, I also remembered to ask about the Cathead. (PS It was started by two University of Alabama alum, so of course, I didn't have to go far to score) Hmmm, now I'm thinking a Cathead Tonic would be perfect. (Only I forgot the bottle at Riverside!)

Of course, you'll remember this summer, I was all over Tito's vodka--"handmade" in Austin, TX. With Texas blood running through the veins, I contributed my fair share to this little hands'- on distillery.

Now I'm finding out that not only has Absinthe gone all legal on us but Moonshine has as well! What??? You heard me, you can purchase it now legit. Doesn't that kind of take away the only reason why someone would drink the stuff--being a rebel? If you're interested in the vile (moonshine, not absinthe) stuff, here's an entire article on the firewater in Bearings. Ok, ok, my question is why would anyone drink moonshine when you can drink, um Tito's or Cathead or just about anything else? Why? Have you tasted the stuff? I admit to having a no label, "hand made," "small batch" jar in my freezer for several years now. Blech. Patooey. C'mon people, do you really want to go blind??????!!! WTH.

Southern Withdrawals

Here I am at home pining for the river. Sure do miss it all.

I brought a bag of Satsumas home; but the three above are dried from Darlene's tree. I've been drying them in the sun, rotating and such. Each time I glance at them, I think of her.

The teenager stayed a couple of extra days with me after the others left for home. He has a grueling class load coming up before graduation. Twenty-one credits. Ouch. So this was a well-needed break before the storm.

One morning I woke up to find a beach across the river. I knew it was quite shallow on the bank there, but I had not seen the water so low. Ever-changing river. Love it.

The Women Folk of Fish River went on a treasure & trash hunt to the local thrift shops one day. (I'm going to start a blog one day from down there, I swear! "WFFR," coming soon to a screen near you. ha.) Anyhoo, our day began when we spied this hawk with some fresh nibbles on top of a building. (Hi Johnny!) Stupendous.

Of course, we had to have our own nibbles. Linda had suggested the Dragonfly Foodbar; neither Dar or I had been there.

Linda knows her stuff. She had a bowl of noodles; and both Dar and I ordered the taco special. Oh my. It was wonderful. Miss those two. It was such a wonderful visit with both my river "girls."

New Year's Day, we were all invited to Darlene's for supper. Of course, black eyed peas, hoppin' John and greens were served (in addition to the best tiramisu I have ever had made by Linda). Dar passed out little reloved gifts. She is just the best. Only Dar. She found these gnome faery lights for me! Vintage to boot! Oh, Darlene.

Ok, now that I have that out of my system, perhaps I can get something done around this house. Ya think? Brahawahahaa! NOT!

Really?

I simply cannot grasp the fact that 2012 is here. Christmas, come and gone. The Season sure did pass quickly this year.

I'm feeling very optimistic about the New Year, kinda scary actually. It's been a tough couple of years. Honestly, when autumn rolled in, I was half scared that something bad would happen, again. I had a health scare (which turned out to be nothing) that put me into a tail spin in November. It sure did make me think of my absence in this life for a couple of weeks there. I don't normally get all riled up. Just a hard time of year, I suppose. Anyhoo, all is well; and I am quite happy to be moving on.

Christmas turned out to be absolutely perfect. We put up our first tree in two years. I decorated the house quite a bit, bringing out special pieces that meant a lot to me and the boys. Making a trip to NYC to visit family turned out to be our best visit ever, having almost every member there (sans our Cali bro, SIL and niece). If they had been able to make it, it would have been perfect in every way. Family is so important.

Still trying to get cards out. Hey, I did get out some Christmas cards this year. The first in many, many years. Now, I'm moving on to New Year's cards. Ha. That is my usual correspondence.

Wow, 2012. Alrighty then, let's do this thang!

The hub travelled home with 2/3 of the kids on Monday. The teenager and I stayed at Riverside for a little more R&R. We drove back north yesterday. The hub, travelling again, left a lovely vase of roses for me upon my arrival. Aww.

American Pickers in Nashville

Well, after running into Mike Wolfe, of American Pickers' fame, at the Wanda Jackson show, my brother Jim and I were interested in seeing the shop he opened in Nashville.

Yup, there were bobble heads for sale at Antique Archaeology. And T-shirts and cups, oh my. Sad to say, it was pretty much a tourist trap.

It was fun, however, seeing some pieces I remember from the show--especially this Dixie Pig head! 'member?!

I liked the way the tags included where and which season the item was found, kinda museum like. But then, a lot of stuff wasn't even for sale. Tease, tease. That which was for sale? It was very expensive. A $450 suitcase? Nah, I think I'll pass.

I do have my eye on some Hatch prints!

This was the opening weekend for the new music venue Marathon Music Works in Nashville. DJ Johnny getting everyone warmed up for the openers . . .

The Black Belles.

Pretty bad photos, but a really good show. She's an amazing 74 year old rocker! I kept waiting for Jack White to show up on stage because he's the one credited for bringing Mz. Wanda back onto the scene (and The Black Belles record on his label). I love that. Just what Bonnie Rait has done for the old blues' players.

A fun moment of the evening (among many) was parking next to Mr. Mike Wolf of American Picker fame. He's recently moved his family to Nashville, and has even opened a store here. I'm dying to go, but I'm trying to stay away as long as I can! ha. Anyhoo, we pull into the parking lot and this old VW bug parks right next to us. I look out and it's Mike Wolf! How funny. A really nice gent when we asked about the bug. He stayed in the VIP "loft." Fa fa fa. Probably where Jack was, if he was there. I wondered if Mike helped with the outfitting of some of the items in the place. It was very industrial feeling. I suppose they wanted to keep that warehousey feel because it was once home of Marathon Motor Works. Who knew there were cars made in Nashville in the late 1800s into the early 1900s? Not I.

Oh, and PS, the aligator bracelet I wore last night (photo in previous post) was a birthday present from my brother! Is it not kick ass?!

Birthday dinner at the hot, new restaurant in town. I found out about The Catbird Seat in a monthly newsletter I get via email, Nashville Bearings. Yea, it says it's for "guys." What can I say? I find a lot of goodies in there--Catbird Seat being one of them. I made reservations for my birthday dinner as soon as I read about it and another one for when my brother Jim comes down for Thanksgiving. Oy. After last night, I think I may just be ready to eat again by then, but not much sooner! Oooof.

The hub and I love to go to The Patterson House for delicious libations. The bartenders are absolutely amazing and know their stuff. Below is the story on how the name came about and why it feels more like a speakeasy than a bar. Love it!

How delightful that the two-brother owners expanded to the upstairs of the old house and developed the Catbird Seat restaurant. One brother Ben, greeted us when we arrived. I was sooooo excited to finally be here!

We were first brought small "Oreos." But were they Oreos? Of course not, sillies. They were porcini mushrooms with parmesan cheese/cream. Wow. Just sit back and enjoy the show!

Jane, the "beverage extraordinaire" as they call her, paired this lovely aperitif of sherry and chartreuse (carbonated) and served it in this little vintage-looking glass with the "snacks." Absolutely lovely. And, YUM. I've never had chartreuse before, but it has always been one of my favorite colors. (grin)

A delightful little radish with seaweed butter.

Chef Josh pouring our chestnut soup over a mix of goodies--chantrelle mushrooms, carrots, granola, hibiscus leaves . . . need I say more?

Jane serving a wonderful champagne, Marc Hebrart MV Brut. Yummy.

A poached egg yolk, caviar (my first ever) with white onion/bacon emulsion, fried chicken shaving, chervil and shallot gels. Mix it all together and wow, you have an explosion of texture and taste.

A scallop on a schmear of avocado puree, with coconut powder, kiwi, and melon for me. (I can't eat fish, only shellfish--go figure.)

And the same only made with cod for the others.

Double-sided-skin duck with an autumn roll consisting of brussel sprouts and spaghetti squash with a dollop of butternut puree. Soooooo good!

Wagu beef from Montana with a sweet potato fingerling, farmers cheese, black truffle, nasturtium leaf and forest mushroom conserva. You can poke me with a fork, I'm done.

Oh dear, Delice de Bourgogne cheese with parsley gel, apricot puree droplets and shitake mushrooms, maybe fried. I could only get a bite in, I was, by then, over riched. Ouchy.

Desert? Oh deary me. But how could I not? Good thing I didn't finish the cheese dish above, although it was oh-so-good.

Your beverage pairing is lifted to find the chocolately desert. (Sorry, I don't remember what the dark beverage was. I don't drink enough beer or wine to know what I'm looking for on the menu!)

Mmmm, all I know is dark chocolate with pistachio crisp. Flavolicious! I had already od'd by now.

The sweets' chef brought out more! My head was spinning by then, and all I can say is burnt oak ice cream? Cherry crisp? Bourbon gel "dots?" Wowie zowie. Oh so good.

More???? Now these were soft, home-made Oreos.

And then to end it all, some peanut butter nougat. Shoot me now.

Brother Ben soon woke us from our food coma to present menus of the evening's gastric orgy. I count 12 dishes above. Gawd.

I can't even begin to tell you how utterly amazing the evening was. Good friends, good drink, good food? Doesn't get any better. Hats off to the new Catbird Seat! Bravo.

To Connecticut and Back

I don't know if y'all will ever forgive me for being so nonchalant about blogging recently. I have been photographing, I promise. Just seems like a chore to blog with them. Ugh.

There was a recent trip back North for a GGC gathering--you know, with my besties. Pam had moved to Connecticut a couple of years back, built a beautiful home and invited us up, in a nutshell.

Among other wonderful things that we did, we went to Whiteflower Farm. How utterly exciting!!

And even though the season was about spent, there were still plenty of beautiful blooms.

And yes, I finally bought some Iris bulbs to plant and YES! they are in the ground. Astounding, indeed.

A Quickie

Ok, ya'll already know I'm a music ho. It only took me about ten years to finally enjoy the fruit of Nashville's labor--its music and venues! Now, I'm trying to catch up, fast!

Then brothers' Jake and Jamin, aka Jeff the Brotherhood hit the stage. I think Nancy and I met these two hanging with my new bf, lil' Jack (Lawrence from the Racs). A friend with us spotted the three coming out of a restaurant as we headed to the Ryman. Of course, Nancy and I had to go back and wish 'em good luck for the night. Lil' Jack Lawrence was so adorable in his large-framed glasses. What a cutie. (I'm getting old when I say the boys in the band are adorable. Ha!) Ouch.

They did a great job winding us up for the Raconteurs.

Shades of Autumn

Yesterday was the most gorgeous day. It started out a tad rainy but then the sun came out and it became the loveliest of afternoons. A perfect 70 something degrees. Bring on the fall! Please note the UT orange. The kid is thinking about attending UT next year. One graduating, one applying! What a wonderful time in our lives. Looks like we may be staying in Nashville a couple more years! (But don't tell the mental note in my brain that has me on a mission to get the house in order to sell! Shhhhhhhh.)

We've had this old collapsible top hat in the family for as long as I can remember. Looks like I'll be decorating it for Halloween. Obviously, I've already started.

Here I am chasing shadows again. Love.

Project Work

Here's my latest fiasco. Ugh. The pit, rag, bonus room; call it what you will. It's a mess. Time to get it cleaned up. "Must keep this 'moving soon' mental note in my head." Front and center.

The teenager moved into a new apartment this year at UT. The last three years, his places came furnished. So, I had told him, and his roommates, they could have our old furniture, the grey stuff. Now, mind you, this is my first set of furniture I bought when I moved into my first apartment. So, we're talking, um, 25 year-old furniture. It's still in pretty good shape, considering. A queen sleep sofa (have to ask Raphi how comfortable that is, though), love seat and chair? Free. Ok, so long-story-shorter, they changed their minds after the hub and I had prepared for them to pick it up.

And so started the ball rolling in this room.

The table on the right, I had set up many years ago. I got all the kids' photos out and started their scrapbooks, again. Well, I think I may have done ONE page. One. Period. Time to sort and move all of it again. Like in storage. ha.

The hub (as all men do) wants to buy a pit for in here. I don't know 'bout that. But, I do know that once I start painting, changing the carpet, etc. new furniture will be at the top of the list. Sigh.

Tropical Storm Lee

TS Lee followed us back through the Smokies from Atlanta; but thank goodness, it was an intermittent rain. Those hills can be treacherous in the best of weather!

So happy we left on Sunday. There was flooding in both Atlanta and Chattanooga. We dodged that bullet! Wish Lee could have turned west and hit Texas with some well-needed rain. Crazy weather patterns these days.

So happy to be home where we can sit back and enjoy the rain from inside. Cooler weather has settled in for a couple of days too. We'll always take that!

Southern Haute

We love "haute'lanta!" So we continued on our journey after Chatanooga.

Our first dinner was at Empire State South.

House charcuterie, mustards and pickles; oysters of three varieties to begin.

Sole for the kid with flash-fried mushrooms--mmmmmm.

The hub had duck breast with hominy. I don't know that the hub had tried this southern staple before and asked me to tell him what it was. (grin) Hominy reminds me of my childhood. Mom would sauté a pan full every once in a while. It was always a treat for me--Ms. starch junky!

And, speaking of which, field peas for Ms. starch junky herself!

Didn't try it, but sounds delightful.

No Phatty Cakes? Pffffft! We'll pass, then.

And save it for breakfast the next day at Rosebud in Virginia Highlands. (We had a Virginia Highlands growing up in Arlington; so it's a special neighborhood for me.) There are even more great places to shop and eat since I was last here several years' back.

Of course, we had to get rainbow cookies and bialys (stay tuned). Always have to make that stop at our favorite Atlanta deli Goldberg's.

Although this looks quite Autumnesque, don't believe it. It was almost, if not, 100˚! Ugh. Frankie and I stayed in the shade.

And then we sniffed out Bluff View Bakery. Just what I need, my friends. Of course, we had to stop. What a beautiful, old building.

And, of course, we had to go in. Well, Frank stayed in the car. I found delightful soft pretzels and a small loaf of chocolate bread. Ya think anyone is eating any of it except Frankie and I? Nope. Just us. Figures.

After playing with her all afternoon, I relocated her to the hall upstairs on the old school desk. Perfect!

Speaking of love, love, love a-n-d yummy, here's a few shots from last Sunday. We had a wonderful brunch with friends at Fish & Co. Of course, I am back on a diet trying to take off the unwanted pounds I've gained over the past two years. But ya know, I wasn't wanting for anything after this salad. It was just so fresh and summery. (Still so hot down here.)

The hub had the omelet, which I believe was spicy. Yes, I tried the taters. And yes, they were as good as they look.

Ok, I'm officially hungry, again. I should have waited until after dinner to write this!

Keeping Up

The bump? I thought it was a dance. Well, back in the day, it was. And, I'll have you know, I could do a pretty mean bump. Today, not so much. I think I'm as round as I am tall. I could fall, and roll, and you'd never see me again. Hmmm. Ok, regardless . . . the BUMP is back-- in a new technological-kinda way. It's a new app for the iPhone that exchanges phone numbers with just a shake. Now, I don't have an iPhone, don't care about having an iPhone (touch-screen challenged here), but I do love hearing about all the new apps. How brilliant is this one? Ok, everyone go and get the new Bump app, K? I just can't keep up with all this technological goo. But, I am trying to keep up with music. Don't ever take that from me. Please.

Earlier in the summer, a friend told us that ZPZ (Zappa Plays Zappa) was coming to the Schermerhorn, our beautiful symphony hall here in Nashville. I had not seen Dweezil (Frank's oldest son) do ZPZ nor had I been to the Schermerhorn. So yes, I was gonna go--if there were only one seat left in the place, I was gonna go. Of course, all I could think of was my brother Johnny and how he told me about his experience, several years' back, of seeing ZPZ. He said, "When I closed my eyes, I was in Zappa heaven." I will never, ever forget that. Hey, who knows, Johnny and Frank my be somewhere jamming right now. Who knows. Johnny sure could play a great guitar in his day.

You know the most influential music in my childhood was The Beatles and Frank Zappa (w/ and w/o The Mothers). My brothers raised me on those two staples. We never missed a Zappa concert that was within 100 miles of DC. I was probably all of 13 when I first saw him live. It was always the highlight of the year for us. At least it was for me. My brothers would buy an entire row of seats when they could and then all of our friends would get their tickets from one of them. That many friends in one spot at a concert? Priceless. What great memories.

I'm still grinning thinking about it. No one was disappointed, I don't think. It was a great show by Dweezil and the rest of the players. I was very surprised that the Dweez didn't open his mouth once to sing. Wonder whatup? The young Ben Thomas did the singing. Not bad. Kinda comical, kinda cute --as it should be in that role singing Zappa, right? Well, at least he had all the words correct. Now, Dweezil's channeling of his father on guitar was amazing though. Yes, you could close your eyes at those times and say "Yup, Zappa heaven."

So, you wonder. Could it get any better? Oh yes, my friends. It could. It did. Looky at who played after ZPZ. Um, yes, that is Stanley Clarke, Jean-Luc Ponty, Chick Corea, Frank Gambale and Lenny White--aka Return to Forever. Who knew? I am definitely going to have to do a better job at keeping up with this music thing.

Let me tell you what. Stanley? Still got it, baby. (Did I tell you the first time I saw Stanley Clarke? Well, he opened for Bob Marley. Uh huh. The Bob Marley. That concert was a spiritual experience for me. No, it wasn't the ganja. People! Well, hmmm, maybe it was, ha! That place was smokin'!) Stanley is still smokin'!

Ok, click on the photo above, please. WHO is this guy?? And why is he wearing sunglasses and a business suit? I spied him earlier and thought, well, perhaps he was blind. Nope. Just hot sh*^, I guess. (And yes, of course, Stanley is pointing to me. Yes he is. hahahahaha)

The only thing that would have made the night Zappa Shangri-La? Jean-Luc playing with Dweezil. But, that's ok guys. I'll keep those Zappa-heaven moments close to my heart.

Hazy Days and Lazy Nights of Summer

We're winding down here in Middle Tennessee. The kids have all gone back to school; first full week has come and gone. The hub and Frankie enjoy a stogie in the evenings on the front porch.

Gone too are the county fairs.

But there seem to be plenty of bunny sightings these days. I don't know how they survive so close to "Dave's" house (the cat). Very surprising that we haven't had any bunny-part presents this year. That's a good thing.

Bella doesn't seem to care. She is actually using her new cat "bowl" bed. (Don't tell her, but I rubbed it all over Frankie's bed first since she seemed to enjoy that dog smell. Hmmmm.)

The back trees are needing a little assistance in the watering department.

Unfortunately, the poison ivy seems to be quite content with no help from me at all. Now, if I could only remember to get some ivy killer. I would hate to end the summer with that stuff all over me! Ugh.

As the World Turns

I am so happy to see the first signs that summer will be closing up shop soon. Whenever I notice these brilliant shadows in the afternoons, I know fall is just around the corner. Yay.

As wonderful as summer is, come August most people are just about ready to move along into autumn. My hand is raised high; Me, me, me! I'm one of those people! I am SO ready. The summer flowers are just about spent and I'm already thinking mums in the window boxes. I bought a new hummingbird feeder for Riverside and brought it back to Tennessee with me. I've never been able to attract them here. Hmmmm. Well, low and behold, the new feeder did the trick. (Too far away for a photo, I'm afraid.) How excited am I. They have always reminded me of my Uncle Euell in Carrollton. He was friends with his hummers, and it was heartwarming to watch.

Feed up little ones, soon it will be time to head south!

I can hardly believe our summer is almost coming to an end. Honestly, I am always about ready to move along to fall. It's been a wonderful summer at Riverside (my first long stay). We have had lots of company and a lot of new memories were made.

School starts in a little over a week. The hub and kid went back to Nashville yesterday. I stayed and am preparing (cleaning) the house in order to close her up. We'll be back in the fall, but I like to get most of the outside things put away. You never know who will come visiting (storms) while we're gone.

Can you believe it's August??!! Next thing you know, it'll be Christmas!

What's better than cooking up some syrupy sweetness with local blueberries, a little butta and Gran Gala? Only the waffles you pour it over!

Opened the deep freeze and found a skull staring back at me. And . . . on top of some Gulf shrimp and beside Petron. Goodness!

Friends over for a delish LA Boil. Mmmmmm.

Another trip to Pensacola for lunch at McGuire's, a must if you're in the area.

Not that I quite know what a New Orleans Sno-Ball is, but they are the shaved-ice variety (rather than the crunchy crushed ice) --and good.

Oooopsy, the last of the Gosling's. Hard to find in these parts. Guess a trip back to Bermuda is in order?

Of course, a trip to the Fish River grill is always in order.

Mom's green beans, cooked for hours. Even made her creamed corn. Stick a fork in me and call me done!

But, then there's the jaunt to Mississippi that found us at Mary Mahoney's with Mississippi Mud Pie and MM's goodness in a bowl. No, it's not grits and gravy. That be bread pudding with whiskey sauce! Bring it on baby! "More?" you say.

Oh yes, of course there is. One must never miss a chocolate merengue pie from Sweetie Pies in Gulf Shores. Well, someone couldn't wait, obviously! Reminds me of my dad with a spoon. There was always a piece of something missing whatever was being served. When it was, whatever it was, put out for everyone else to enjoy, there'd be a big ol' hunk taken out! Poor mom. ha!

And the last frozen glass of the best margarita made North of the Rio Grande (and thus no more Petron). Thank YOU N&P! I think some shopping at the local ABC store is in order before the next batch of friends arrive!)

And a new fave from TX. Mr. Parker brought this bottle down from Nashvegas to try, knowing I'm a vodka-drinking-fool at times. He--the afore-mentioned friend--turned into Riverside's resident bartender for the weekend of the 4th. Holy moly, great memories. Those I can remember anyhows.

Riverside in Bloom

I've been doing this and doing that. Truly enjoying Riverside for the first time, appreciating the beauty like never before.

I've never had enough time to plant here. I'm normally only here for a mere week or two. It's been so wonderful. Kelly and Amy had saved some seed from a vine at Panini Pete's after I left several years' back.

I finally got the tiny seed planted. They popped up within a day!

Here is a couple of days' worth of sprouting.

And then today, I transplanted them, only after a week or so. Fingers' crossed they survive!

Darlene found this little lady burying her eggs in her back yard. We had more spots, or so I thought, next to our house. Dar dug and dug, but nothing. I wanted baby turtles too!

My window box in the back yard seems to be doing better. Everything was in shock after I transplanted them.

Including the hibiscus. It really went down hill quick; but I'm happy to say, she looks good now.

Father's Day at The Grand Hotel

We took the hub to the Grand Hotel (the Marriott) in Point Clear for brunch. The food was fabo, but ya know what? The place is like a fortress. We pulled up to the "guard house" (I'm serious) and told "the guard"we were going to the brunch; and he told us we had to turn around and park across the street--I suppose only hotel guests can park close. He did say that he would send a "shuttle" (golf cart) to pick us up. Well, it was hot, as it is down south in the summertime, duh; and rather than waiting, we just walked over to the main building.

Yea, this is about how we looked by the time we got there. Ooooof. Even after we got seated, the waitress was less-than-enthusiastic about waiting on us. Ugh. I so hate that.

So, needless to say, it was the first and probably last time we'll go there. I am so unimpressed with pretentiousness.

Regardless, I think the hub had a very nice Father's Day. We love him so.

The Colors of Paris in Spring

Noooo, I'm not in Paris. You know I would have told you if I were going to Paris! These are photos from May of 2008 when the kid and I were visiting Raphael. As he says, "En Mai fait ce qu'il te plait" (In May, you do what you want). Which is exactly what we did. The teenager is, however, in Paris taking French courses for a month. Nothing like being immersed into the culture to learn a new language. Paris? Excusey-mwa.

Ahhhh, "shopping" in the Galleries Lafayette. When Raphael first told me we were staying very close to the Galleries, I thought he was talking about an art gallery. I was quite pleased to find shopping galleries instead! The only shopping we did, however, was the purchase of this box of beautiful chocolates that looked more like pastels. They didn't last long.

Ahhhh, the main gallery was magnificent, to say the least.

I pictured myself living in the corner penthouse in this building with marvelous views of the Eiffel Tower and the hustle bustle of Paris below. I think I could handle that, if I knew the language.

Ahhhh, springtime in Paris.

And then there is Rennes in Brittany. This is where Raphael is from. It's absolutely beautiful, sigh.

And we will never forget Mont Saint-Michel in Normandy.

I can't wait for the teenager to see all of this, and more.

He even gets to stay with Raphael for a week after he is finished with his classes. This is going to be quite the experience for him!

My Hair

Here we go again. Summer (or a special occasion) must be around the corner. I've gone and made my hair kooky, again.

My stylist (hair stylist, that is--as if I have any other type), is always "in" with the latest hair stuff. She's all of anything under 30. For my 50th birthday, I said "I want those blond thingies you have." Btw, she's blond. So yes, I have almost-platinum-blond peekaboos strategically located throughout my doo. Today? She had feathers, yes feathers, dispersed on one side. Of course, my reaction was, "I want those."

Fleurs et de Faises

Counting down the days until Riverside!! The teenager and his girlfriend's family are there now. Envious, to say the least. One and a half more weeks of school!!!

Two Infatuations

First, this little clutch I found online is driving me crazy, I am so in love with it. I haven't used a clutch in years. But this one, or at least that turquoise color, caught my eye. But it is so much more. I am loving it!

And, then there's my copper pot. I normally pull these "nice ones" out during the Holidays, and they sit in a cabinet the rest of the year. Well, I love my non-stick cookware as much as the next guy, but I've begun to wonder about the coating. If it's dangerous to birds . . . ? Well, hello? So, anyhoo, some of my nonstick pieces are beginning to show wear (and that's supposed to be a no-no in regards to emitting whatever into the air). Sorry, my favorite Berndes pot, you're out. You're fired! (What the heck was all that Donald stuff about? Lawds.) . . . And, hello beautiful! (above)

Turning chilly tonight. My Tennessee friends call it locust winter--which is when a cold snap comes in for a day or two after all the trees (including locust) have already bloomed from spring. Frost. Really? Ugh for my plants. Yay for me. I'm loving it. (Portland keeps calling, right. lol)

The hub is out of town. Here and there in bouts to the North. Therefore, I am getting things done. Finished finding, sorting, scanning and printing old photos and recipes for some of my cousins. I hope to get so friggin' organized before I move again, I won't know what to do. Little by little. Piece by piece, I'm gettin' it done. Of course, at the rate I'm getting all this "organizing" done, I won't be finished for another five years. Ha ha ha.

I've become so bad with writing posts, I can't even think of titles anymore. How pitiful is that? Pretty darn. All the royal wedding hoopla has made me miss being close to family. I finally found a box to hold my brother Jim's "candid" photos he gives me. Of all the places I looked for some type of photo-safe containers online, the only store who had anything remotely what I was looking for was Paper Source. Go figure. Which reminds me, one is soon to open in Nashville! Yay! I found out that little tidbit while I was in Portland.

We've had beautiful weather since the storms came through earlier in the week. I've even been doing a little gardening and sprucing up the place a tad outside. I haven't done that in about two years. Maybe my mojo is returning. Let's hope.

"Come In," She Said

We had a very long day of storm-after-storm hitting the mid-south yesterday. Just south of us, in Alabama, they had over 100 tornadoes touch down. I hope everyone is safe and has only minimal clean up. We were very lucky, again. My heart goes out to those who were not so fortunate.

Update: Seems the little fellers were waiting for the storms to pass because today, they were fluttering about testing out their new gear! It was precious to watch as mom and pop squawked commands (I guess). Bella got outside in the middle of the flying lessons, and I had to quickly catch her before momma pecked her to bits. Bless her little heart (momma, not Bella--Bella had evil things on her mind).

Another week has passed me by. I find it so difficult to write all my doings down in post form these days. Ugh. As usual, so many pictures to share, just can't seem to sit down and write around them. Well, I'm trying! We had a cool and rainy week which brought all of my lilies of the valley out in full force. Oh, I adore those tiny, white bells. They remind me of mom (Lillie) and my Aunt Mary, her sister, who had an amazing abundance of lily of the valley in her gardens. Awwww.

Saturday, April 16, was Record Store Day. I grabbed the hub and we made our way down town. We first drove by our usual record store, Grimey's; but the line getting into the parking lot (where the sale was taking place) was around the block! Um, I don't think so. So we continued on our merry little way down the street to Third Man Records. TMR was started by Jack White (of White Stripes fame). It just so happened that Jack was recording a live session for Jerry Lee Lewis this day. I love Jerry Lee Lewis and even met him back in the 70s when my parents were always at a country music show--which meant that I had to go because I was a girl and my brothers couldn't be trusted to "watch" me. lol Probably a good move on my parent's behalf, but I hated it! Country music? Blech. But bad ass Jerry Lee Lewis? Always loved him. Shoulda been the Elvis of the time, but we all know he messed that one up!

Of course, the JLL tickets sold out very quickly for the the small studio inside TMR. Then I find out that more tickets went on sale, with proceeds going to charity. Missed that sale too. Ha. Then, I find out the entire show was moved outdoors across the street in a parking lot! The show wasn't supposed to begin until 5, but I knew we wouldn't be able to stay that long because, after all, it was the kid's junior prom night!

It turned out to be a very COLD day. Windy and no sun. And I don't think it was expected, because not too many of us were dressed for the wind.

But once we spied the Grilled Cheeserie truck, we got all warmed up inside.

Literally, it did warm us up! I had the pimento cheese and bacon grilled cheese. Yum!

We watched as Jack White was the first recipient of the Music City Ambassador Award presented by the Mayor. I got too excited and missed this shot and videoed it instead. Lawd, help me. Loves me some Jack.

The Killer's piano unveiled. Oooooh, aaaahhhhhh. Well, with all the waiting in line, we never did make it inside to buy any of the special stuff only on sale for the day. We had to get home as the afternoon was fading fast. The kid had his Junior Prom, and we had to get home! First things first!

I so loved making the kid's boutonniere with the Lily of the Valley from the front garden. He was so handsome. Sniffle. My baby.

Ok, so I wake up Sunday and read that the evening show with Jerry Lee had been postponed because of the weather messing with the instruments. The show was going on Sunday! Of course, I grabbed the hub again, and off we ran! Just in time.

Jerry Lee could still tickle those keys and his voice has held up amazingly well for his 75 years. He sang two faves, Whole Lotta Shakin' and Great Balls of Fire. The hub and I were definitely shakin' it up!

Here is Jim Keltner's drum set. Keltner has played with just about everyone--all four of the Beatles (even played along side of Ringo for the Concert for Bangladesh), Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Roy Orbison, Stones, etc. If those drums could talk, huh!

"I'm thinking about my door bell ringing. When ya gonna ring it? When ya gonna ring it?" Loved the doorbell notice.

And the Third Man Monkey Band! Yay. We finally made it into the tiny shop. Yay!

And then we were hungry. We moseyed on over to the Farmer's Market and finally found our Waffle Man!

We made it home and I listened to some of my new albums! Yaya.

Monday came and The Latin Wagon came to a neighborhood near me! Frankie and I ran over when we heard and got us some grub.

Tequila Lime Chicken Burrito w/fries. Oh dear, with hot sauce! It was amazing.

Now on to this weekend! Brawhahahahaha. It will be hard to beat last week! But, we're trying!

The Hog Log

In our teenage and early twenty-something years, we used to have Redskins' parties and watch the game. (I much rathered eating and socializing than watching the game. In trouble now!) Sometimes, mom would make a chocolate refrigerator cake, which we lovingly named The Hog Log, in honor of the Redskins' offensive line, the Hogs.

I haven't made this thing in years! And it's so easy and tastes like a big ol' Oreo cake, but not as sweet. I found some chocolate-mint wafers and stacked them as the first two layers before the darker chocolate ones. Yum.

Voila. I've been promising the teenager's GF that I was going to make one. Promises, promises. But finally, one is chilling in the fridge waiting for their arrival tomorrow sometime. Yay. We have a Cherry Blossom Festival to go to. Another pang in my heart for that, also. Of course, the Cherry Blossom Parade in DC is one of the highlights of the year. (I've never, ever been to one, as it's also the busiest day for the family photography business at the Capitol building--I always had to work!!) I can't wait to see what little ol' Nashvul has in store for us. Hope to get lots of pics tomorrow!

Speaking of tomorrow, the kid (sniffle) is going to his Junior Prom. Sniffle. He has his tux, sniffle, and I'm going to make his boutonniere out of Lily of the Valley from our garden. They remind me of mom and her sister, Mary. Sniffle. Will take pictures of how that turns out! Never made one before, but how difficult can it be? Truly. Sniffle.

Street Food

Before leaving for Portland, I did my research on food carts around the city. The kid and I did make our way to them and had a most wonderful lunch. I chose this cart, sorry, I don't have the name (shame on me!). The gent was making pita sandwiches from local produce and meats; so I chose his cart. Unfortunately--well not really--but the three folks ahead of me got the last of the pita. "Who needs pita?" And this is what he dished out for me.

He threw a big ol' slab of meatloaf on the foil, smashed potatoes and a mustard white gravy. You could have knocked me down. So you see, it wasn't unfortunate at all not having pita. You agree? Talk about food for the soul.

The kid chose The Frying Scotsman to prepare his lunch; and the gent truly was Scottish. His brogue was so thick, he had to repeat himself several times to me. Fish and chips were, of course, his specialty. (No pics as the kid had almost finished his by the time I got back to our little spot on the block; but y'all have seen fish and chips before.)

We passed The Grilled Cheese Grill several times in the Alberta neighborhood where we took our classes. Did we stop and eat there? No. Did I see it on TV after returning home and want to kick myself? Yes. Listen to this: grilled cheese with mac & cheese, pulled pork and caramelized onions. Ok, next time, for sure!

So, yesterday, I'm sitting around reading the local City Paper and find out that Nashville has its own food trucks. Wha? Where? Who???? Guess I've been living under a rock. In fact, I have. I've been calling myself a hermit. Guess I'm going through a stage. ha. Regardless, looky at what I've dug up! Who knew?

I am so bad, I know. I apologize. I have photos from everywhere to share and I just keep pushing them aside. What is up with that? Yes, Easter is around the corner, so you KNOW I'm decorating! I found these wonderful chicks stashed in the basement. Bought them at Harrod's this summer (on the 1/2 off table) and completely forgot about them. They are tooooo cute! (Note the Oregonian rocks I carried home?)

Earlier in the week, we got slammed with more storms. I noticed the doves hunkered down on the bird feeder and saw the storm coming (round II). The wind started whipping and I went to get something to tie the bird feeders down with and . . .

Boom! By the time I got back to the door, a wall of water hit. Literally. We lost shingles on the roof which I am still finding in the yard. Thank goodness I had already made an appointment for our roofer to come out and do some other work. Lord knows what's going on up there now!

We were so enamored with pancakes for dinner in Portland, we made them again. This time, I made fried pears.

YUM! And yes, I'm soooo fat!

Recipe for 2:

1 pear

1 T butter

1 T honey

1/4 t cinnamon

1/4 t lemon and/or orange zest

spec of nutmeg

We made it Portland, finally! I already feel like I'm home. We are loving it here.

I had my first (and last) Bloody Mary at breakfast. Yuk.

We found Besaw's around the corner. Yum. Everything was great. Good thing I cleansed before I got out here, huh?

Of course, we made a bee-line to the big toy shop in town, Finnegan's.

We ran into a peace rally. How cool is this? Reminds me of my childhood!

Spring is in the Air

You'd think, one day, I may just grow my own iris. I haven't planted them in the past two placed we've lived. That's just not right. I adore them!

My daffs are blooming, so I've made the place look a little springy inside also.

I love these little fellows.

The basement is coming along just dandy. (Don't look too closely at the smaller "before" pic. HOARDER!) I don't care to admit to how much junk I threw out or gave away. Why in the world do some of us do this? Lawdy me. I got it from my mom. Hope my kids don't catch it from me!

While we had wonderfully warm weather yesterday, there was a nip in the air today. The hub was given a wonderful gift of Chinese tea when he was in Beijing last week. It is perfect for these cooler afternoons.

Today we've had this spring forward time change, which is always a challenge. I don't much like it.

I found this wonderful old mason jar full of buttons. I cleaned the jar and replaced the buttons. Now, where will I put it? Maybe in my bedroom.

I'm still pulling albums from the basement and enjoying my turntable.

My Obsession

Deary me. First I find several boxes of albums (of the vinyl variety) in my basement. Then I find a compact turntable online. Boom. 1 + 1 = obsessed.

I've been bringing albums up all day and playing them. All dayeeeee! Thank goodness my brothers taught me, early on, how to take care of and keep the records clean. They are all, well mostly, in great shape. A little dusty in some grooves, but with a little cleaning, voila, beautiful sound. That's even after being stored in attics, basements and garages for over 25 years!

This is my first day's worth that I'm airing out (and did I mention PLAY??!). Ha. I'm having way too much fun with these.

The weather has been nice, so the doors have been thrown open all day.

The basement is coming along.I have been through every single box down there, thrown 2/3s out and now have the dastardly deed of really organizing. Like for the first time in my life! Yay for me!

A Little Bit O' This . .

Don't you love my "personal" wine glass? The teenager's girlfriend made it for me! She's a very sweet and kind young lady. Awwwww.

It's been a busy couple of weeks. I am still cleaning the basement out, with many trips to the dump, filling both wagon's up with JUNK! Just about there, folks.

I had a quick trip back home to get some Executor things done in the Arlington Co. courts for Johnny's estate. The hub had business, so I jumped on board of that train! (Wish we had trains--a car train would be perfect!!)

When we arrived, we drove into Old Town (Alexandria) to have a meal at one of our old haunts.

I was born in Old Town and the hub lived here when he first moved to Washington. In fact, our first dinner together was here. Anyway, it was good going home this time.

Gotta love the old pubs.

The second night, I was able to meet up with Mary Jane, my SIL, and my niece Kelly and her two boys, my grandnephews. We ate wonderful American fare at Sweetwater. Jack, the oldest, drew this while we were waiting for a table. Simply amazing. The kid has had no training whatsoever.

The second night, the hub and I were able to go out with my brother Jim and his family. These were not part of that dinner, we had Italian. Really good Italian, although you would never have guessed it coming from a place called Pasta Plus in a strip mall. Ha, that's where you always find the best restaurants! I had the most delicious stuffed shrimp (with crab) on risotto. The hub and I had a quick lunch earlier in the day at a place that was near my mom's old house in Potomac Yard (where there are actually trains!), Hops. They have the most divine "rolls." In actuality, they are croissants with a little Krispy Kreme-ish drizzle. Oh my.

Staying in the old neighborhood (in a hotel) was a little bit of a trip. I have walked these streets many-a-time. Our house was less than a mile from here. This is Crystal City. To the right, in between the two buildings, is Pentagon City. In the background is Arlington Ridge, where my elementary school was. Pout.

To put things in perspective, here's a map. I sure do miss it.

Unfortuantely, this trip, I was unable to meet up with any friends. I plan on driving up next time so I can see my buds.

A Missed Birthday

Bella and I have been up to no good. I've been buying plants to put around the house, coaxing, Mother Nature to give us a little more spring.

Of course, Miss Bella has to inspect anything new that comes into the house.

Then she goes down for a nap. Aw, such the life Bella has.

I found this kooky paper hat during one of my adventures this week. I had to have it, for some reason. Here I am in the basement throwing jank out and I'm upstairs buying more schtuff to put out. What's up with that? I am so ready to have this winter behind me. I'm ready for some rebirth!

The kid captured this beautiful sunset the other night. I used to think that Virginia had the most beautiful sunsets anywhere. Tennessee has ol' Virginny beat, I'm afraid!

Spring sprung where you are? Beth and I were supposed to go on a picnic today up on the Natchez Trace, but it turned out chilly and overcast; so we went shopping instead! The sun finally did peep out for a bit, after Beth headed back home. Isn't it always the way!

I couldn't think up a name, so . . . Seems it's hibernation mode down here in the South. Burr doggy, it's colder than a, well, you know. So cold I've even been dripping some faucets! Now that's cold! I've been hunkered down in the house staying warm. I'm still cleansing.

Not only am I cleansing myself, I have been in the basement "cleansing" that. Oh my. The things I have saved over the years boggles the mind. I am, however, happy I saved some of my 45s. The kid didn't even know what a 45 was! Oy. Now, that's scary (and a sign that I'm old). I figure if I start cleaning out now, clean some every day, by the time we get ready to move in a year and a half, it should be finished! ha!! Ya think? (It is that bad.) But I know exactly where I get the hoarding issues from. I remember, as if it were yesterday, cleaning out my mom's house that we all grew up in. I said, "Daig, mom, did you save every box that was ever mailed to you???!" Well guess what I'm finding in my own basement? Boxes, from everywhere! With nothing in them! Wha???? Kooky.

In between cleanses, the hub and I went to see Robert Plant and the Band of Joy in Nashville this week. I had purchased the new album at Thanksgiving when the bro was here. I had all but forgot about it as everything happened right then. A friend in Virginia (who I had seen Led Zeppelin with back in the early 70s) went to see them and raved. So, I had to go, too. Of course. I dragged the hub with me. As I may have mentioned, the hub's and my musical tastes are quite different. The kid's take? "Mom is Frank Zappa whereas my father is Frank Sinatra." hahaha. But, he is always a good sport and went along. It was a lot of fun. Honestly? I enjoyed The North Mississippi Allstars better. Go figure. Now, those two guys rocked it. When Robert and the BOJ came on, the music was a lot slower. The audience sat motionless. I could hardly stand it. I mean, this is Robert friggin' Plant! At least sway or shimmy, if only a little bit. Oh well. I did. The band was crazy good. The drummer, Marco Giovino, stood out in my mind the most. He had a very distinct sound, which is rare with drummers, to my ear, anyway. Buddy Miller played some great guitar and Patty Griffin's voice range fit right in with Robert's. I'm happy I went.

The next day, it snowed. The kid took these on he and the hub's walkabout. Beauties!

And, what a beauty Bella is. The sun is shining brightly today. Unfortunately, it's not bringing near enough warmth for our liking!

Long Week

I can't say why it was so long, but it just seemed to last longer than normal. Weeks, months and years seem to be whizzing by me so quickly. Sometimes I'm afraid to blink! This week? Pretty slow.

Point and case, these daffodils were photographed at least two weeks ago. Where did that time go? Boggles the mind.

Sure am happy Phil saw his shadow. Early spring?!!!!

I'm still puttering around the "girls'" room. Adding little things. Moving stuff. You know.

I had found these wonderful note cards way back when and I've stuck them in the card holder on the wall, along with a million other things.

I'll have to agree with both of these!

My next move is adding a Warhol/Marilyn print above this lamp. I've been looking for a new shade, as this one just doesn't cut it with the room.

What do you think about this look?

I started a new cleansing diet. Haven't done a really good one for two years. I try and do a mini one every six months; but this one is the big daddy. No caffeine, no dairy, no red meat, no alcohol, no gluten, no sweetners. Ugh. But I've been good on the pre-diet and start the next part tomorrow when the real cleansing begins. Again, ugh. But it has to be done. I have been putting all kind of bad things in my system for the past six months (probably longer). The weight is coming back and I'm not going back there. So wish me luck.

The hub is driving to Memphis for the night. Of all the places that he travels to throughout the world, it's the drive to Memphis and back that always worries me.

A Southern Snow

We've had our share of snow this season. Nothing compared to the North, but quite a bit for our neck of the woods. I missed taking photos of the big storm that hit Nashville a couple of weeks ago, but the kid went out and captured the beginning of our latest one earlier in the week. He has a really good eye for composition! So proud!

Frankie seems to be frightened of (just about everything) the camera and always turns his head when I bring it out to capture how cute he is. "Not gonna get it," he says!

The kid has been happy because he's been out of school a total of seven snow days this year. Unheard of in these parts!

Our shaggy corkscrew weeping willow definitely needs to be trimmed. I love him in the winter months!

I finally got to the basement and began cleaning my junk, again, and trying to organize it. Here is the before shot. You'll notice a hole in the ceiling if you look carefully. A rather large gaping hole, indeed. Last May, when we were heading to NYC for our nephew's baptism we had a leak. The water filter from the kitchen above began leaking. Thank goodness, I had asked the kid to go downstairs and let Frankie out one more time before we left for the airport because this is what he found! It wasn't there in the morning! Water! Blech!!! Well, this all happened the same weekend that Nashville got the major floods that ruined so many houses. I'll be damned if I was going to pay the raised prices of drywallers in the wake of a natural disaster. Nope. So I waited until I had it completely dried out (last week!), before I called a contractor to come out and give it a look-see. I thought it was going to be a ka-ching moment, but it wasn't. We'll have that finished up next week.

So, this is what I did on a snow day. Cleaned it all up (except my dad's old cowboys boots that the teenager is interested in that still sit in the corner). I' so happy!

The teenager was home for the weekend with his sweet girlfriend. Awwww, young love. Nothing better. I seem to be having back problems, again. Wondering if it's another bladder infection, ew. Nothing would surprise me right about now. Ugh. Gonna call the doctor tomorrow. Back on diet, so hopefully, I can lose the 10+ pounds I've gained since I last saw her before the morning. haha.

Abby

We just lost our faithful Abby. She had been showing signs of age for the past month or so. Ab was the last of our Virginia animals that we brought from home. She was over 13 years old, one of our oldest kitties ever.

She started acting strange once my brother and his family left after Thanksgiving; but then she came back to normal. I've been feeding her special canned food (which I never do), and that's what is on her cute nose. This past week, she has been confused and wandering and acting as if she was blind. When we took her to the vets today (after two days of not eating), they checked for diabetes. No. So then the doctor diagnosed that she had a brain tumor. Poor boo.

I'm happy the teenager was home for the weekend to say goodbye. She will be missed.

Love and Strength

I've gathered much strength recently from the love that mom taught us all over the years. Can you teach love? Oh, I think so. She had so much love for her family--her children, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. And through her example, I can happily say, we have always been there for one another. I know that when I'm feeling down, all I have to do is remember that beautiful smile that would light up your moment and make you feel that there was nothing that the love of family couldn't conquer.

We all are so fortunate to have had her as a role model. Thank you mom for teaching us the importance of family love and caring. When it seems like there is nothing else, we always have the love of our families.

Seems that gold is the new black.

I receive a magazine via email entitled High Gloss that is all about what's in. I seem to be the last to know on the block, so I subscribed. It's mostly for the fashionistas, which I am not, but I do love me some home decorating ideas (and some jewelry too!).

Of course, I fell in love with the gold piggy bank. Ouch. A tad expensive, but oh-so-fun, don't you think? Just what I need, right? Love the gold gladiator sandals--have a pair I bought for Bermuda. Pow! Love the bling ring too! The stilettos? Hmmmm, think I'd fall, for sure.

I'm really kinda liking the gold. My mosaic items can all be found at Design Public, a new site for me. Have fun!
